Organic Waste Management

Food waste is a significant contributor to climate change, accounting for roughly 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. When food ends up in landfills, it decomposes anaerobically (without oxygen), producing methane, a greenhouse gas that is over 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of its heat-trapping ability. This means that every bite of food that goes uneaten not only represents a waste of valuable resources—such as water, land, and energy—but also exacerbates the climate crisis.

By reducing food waste through responsible management and community initiatives, we can lessen our carbon footprint, protect our environment, and promote sustainability. Taking action against food waste is crucial for creating a healthier planet for future generations.

Here are two programs available in South Lake Tahoe that can help you handle your organic waste responsibly.

You can drop off your organic waste at South Tahoe Refuse five days a week.

New Drop-Off Location: Food waste will now be accepted at the STR Recycle Buy-Back Center located at 2192 Ruth Ave.

Drop-Off Days and Times:

To encourage community participation, we are offering one free food waste bucket per household. If you're interested, please visit the STR office at 2140 Ruth Ave.

Thank you for helping to keep organic waste out of the landfill!

FeedTahoe is a program by the Marcella Foundation, dedicated to bridging the gap between food waste and food insecurity. Their mission is to rescue surplus food and ensure that perfectly good food reaches those who need it most.

How It Works: FeedTahoe collaborates with a wide network of food donors to collect surplus food and distributes it to nonprofit partners, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfills.

Volunteer Opportunity

You can also make a difference by becoming a FeedTahoe volunteer! Help gather surplus food from local donors such as Safeway, Whole Foods, or Grocery Outlet. You’ll have the flexibility to choose when to pick up food and deliver it to one of FeedTahoe’s nonprofit partners.

Additional Organic Waste Management Options

Composting: If you're interested in composting at home, it’s an excellent way to handle organic waste. If you have a garbage disposal, STPUD also composts the organic waste that is disposed of down the drain.

Important Note: Avoid putting bacon grease or similar substances down your drain, as they can disrupt the composting process.

By participating in these programs and initiatives, you are helping to reduce methane emissions and create a more sustainable community!
